Alexander Hay Greenhouses began in 1908 as a flower cart in the bustling outdoor market of Paterson, NJ. The flowers were grown by Alexander Hay and his parents on their 14 acres of land in North Haledon, NJ. As time went on, the business expanded to include dish gardens, flowering plants and cut flowers. The plants were sold to flower shops in Paterson and shipped to New York City on the daily milk train. Alexander, his wife Annabel and daughter Dorothy, lived on the farm and worked in the fields and greenhouses to produce geraniums, mums and azaleas.
